HOW COULD I RESIST? FACT OR FICTION?

I have a file called "THE TRILOGY" which was to be three stories linking my English past to my New Zealand present. Starting at about 1880 and building up to the twenty-first century via the Boer, two World wars and inumerable crises.

Basic plot, if not written down, firmly set in my head, the first chapter under way.

Suddenly, overnight, everything changed. I received fifty handwritten pages of notes from my [now late] Aunt.

Family history starting in Dorset - The French Revolution - The story of The Madeleine Rose - High jinks at Lulworth Castle - Smuggling - Sail making way for Steam - Pioneering the Fashion industry in Lincoln.

To explain these cryptic phrases:

My mother's maiden name was Madeleine Rose, she was born in Lincoln [350km from Poole].

The Madeleine Rose was a sailing ship used for smuggling refugees/aristocrats from France to England to escape the Guillotine. Eighteenth Century people smuggling.

Jack Rose - formerly Jaques Rousau [?] was an Anglicised Frenchman who became skipper of The Madeleine Rose. He married Mary Whitmore, and their daughter was the first Madeleine Rose [apart from the ship].

My Mother was the last Madeleine Rose, but "Madeliene" has been a family name over four generations from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries.

How and why did the Rose family move from Poole to Lincoln?

The answer was because of the change from sail to steam. In the late nineteenth century my great grandfather moved from Poole to study marine engineering at Rustons in Lincoln.

How does the fashion industry become part of the story?

Because my Great Grandmother Martha [nee Scutt] was trained as a couturier when she worked at Lulworth Castle. Her sponsor was a mysterious "Lady Helen" who was part of Queen Victoria's entourage. Martha was instrumental in establishing the fashion industry and became associated with Mawer & Collingham a major retailer in Lincoln.

FACT OR FICTION?

As yet much of this is uncorroborated but provides the basis for a good story. I have to decide where to go from here, I still want to combine my English background, with my life in New Zealand.

Go for it. There lies a treasure trove of ideas to work with.

No wonder you have such a vivid imagination with that background of great grand parents.
